Went online as I do everymorning and some body has hacked/stolen 1,000 from my current account. This will be the 3rd attempt. However last 3 times cards were stopped and replaced. Fraud from Abbey are dealing with it at the moment. I always worry that I dont get the money back but hopefully I will. Can anybody tell me how can people do this - how do they get the card number - by the way card is in my possession. Are these called so-called hackers. it is so worrying

Cards can be cloned very quickly. Also it is possible to hack into the radio transmissions used by those "hand help" chip and pin machines.

rollo i probably do both but how on earth can you pay for things if you cant use your card. I know you probably say pay cash but sometimes I may get 100 shopping in a supermarket and of course I dont want to be carrying 100s of pounds in my pocket on the off-chance I am going to buying that day. Is there any way round it. thanks
Alot of the time cloning of cards is the problem- but if this has happened 3 times,with different cards, it implies a few options;
1)Have you ever done a password reset/check as a result from an email from your "bank" asking you to reconfirm details? These are always scams. Or maybe you threw out bank statement with your details on. It sounds like they might have your bank details rather than just your card details which would have changed. I would ask your bank to change your bank acount details-i.e close one,and reopen with new details.
2)Or you are using your cards regularly at the same place where the problemis occuring. This could be a dodgy cash point, a shop or restaurant etc where they are swiping your card (often out of site,can you think of any non chipand pin places you go?),or if you are paying over the phone for anything for example pizza.

thanks kiraoo - no I usually use the hole in the wall - never buy internet - used to some time ago. and use the chip and pin at supermarkets.
When I get my new card which should arrive in 7 days - then pin comes separate.
The last time this happened 30 was removed from card - it was found that it paid for mobile top up in a Tescos, Oxford, England, - I dont have a mobile and I live in Northern Ireland

if you are using your card on line there is an extra security you can set up that asks for another code only known to you to finalise the payment, without this code the payment won't go through.
I was hit twice, after the first time they gave me another card and this one also was hit, so i just cancelled and now use the 2 cards that I have the extra security on.

Ethel - Abbey will be sending me out a new card - what can I do to make sure it does not happen again.
This was the 3rd time and as I said on a previous comment that they were all different cards. I dont lend my card to anybody - I live on my own so nobody can use it in the house. I have used it on internet for a few items. But this will be the end of internet buying for me. If the fraud squad could come back to me and tell me where the money was stolen it could probably enlighten me a little bit.

It probably wouldn't help knowing where the card was used - I do all my shopping on line and have recently made purchases in Kent, Glasgow, London and Yorkshire, without leaving Dudley.
Could a relative, friend, neighbour or any visitor get a sneaky peak at your card whilst you are in another room?
You could ask your card provider to bar 'cardholder not present' transactions if you are sure you will never use the card by telephone or internet.

definitely no sneaky peaky relatives involved there. Anyway I am going to move to another bank because where I live I never go into city centre to Abbey and this bank is 2-3 blocks up for me, plus I am deaf and if calls need to be made to England I can get these guys to do it for me where at the moment my friends do it. This will all take time as I will wait of course until my 1,000 goes back into my current account and I think it is easy now to get your direct debits transferred over - will call up to the bank tomorrow for confirmation. Thanks for all your help.
