There is also a pretty good train service in that region, with a station at Malaga airport (well, just over the bridge anyway). As for car hire, we couldn't fault Pepecar, which is a partner of easy rent a car and bookable through their site.
You can get a bus from the centre of M�laga to both Estepona or Ronda http://www.estabus.emtsam.es/ the fares are cheap and the buses are frequent. The bus station can be a bit confusing as there are dozens of busses which begin/end their journey there and the staff are sometimes not as helpful as they might be, but there are usually plenty of Brits at the stops for the places you want.. not me though as I live in the opposite direction!!
