before I apply for any jobs I want to check what is held on national computer for me , to avoid any future embarrassment. Do I write to the police station where I was questioned (but never given a caution or anything)

The police have up to 40 days to respond.
This link is for West Yorkshire police but a look at the form will show you the information that you need to include with your request:

You might have to make a request under the freedom of information act, otherwise they might not have to respond. It won't show anything about questioning though. Your enhanced CRB check will only be sent to your employers - you can't request one on yourself - and will show everything, including information the Police think is relevant, for example if you had been questioned about but not charged with sex offences.
