children's diets

Why do parents feed their children rubbish? I have a 3 year old and i do not want him drinking coke or eating sweets (e.g. smarties, he is quite happy with raisins and fruit for now) yet it's becoming difficult to not let him as other parent sgive young kids these things. Even though shops force them in our toddlers faces so far i've managed to keep him away by saying they are "grown up" things. He is now at playschool and all the children eat c**p. I even saw one mum give a 2 year old coke from a babies bottle (a 2 year old should've given up the bottle anyway let alone drinking coke) I wonder where all the common sense has gone in this country!!

The best way around the difficulty of allowing your child to mix with children who'se parents do not follow the healthy diet you want for your own child, is to let him have sweets and carbonated drinks on a strictly rationed basis. That way he will not feel exlcuded from his peer group, for reaons which he is too young to understand, but old enough to feel aliented, and you will be able to ensure that his diet is as healthy as you can make it. It is not possible to shield a modern child from all the bad things in the world, but you can only try your best, and allow others to enjoy the same freedom of choice to feed their children as they see fit.
