38 Answers
Have spoken about my mum before about her need to buy and hoard useless objects and buy me food that i dont either want or like, its getting worse i keep trying to tell her that i dont like tinned sardines or cheapo tomato soup, and out of date stuff, but she has turned up today with tomato soup and crisps that are out of date, and this hideous giant bratz alarm clock, that a eight year old would relish, obviously got from a boot sale,i was at work so these items were in ther kitchen when i arrived home what can i do???

I've had to turn off my mobile phone answering service, as it infuriates me how she fills my mail box with nothing. She will listen to the recorded message and then when it starts recording, say nothing. This means no one else can leave legitimate messages.
They do become very annoying with age, but I know when my phone eventually stops ringing, because mum is no longer around, I'll be devastated and miss those annoying calls.

It happens, my other half says I'm turning into my mother. I am very negative like her and do moan about everything.
Another thing that is annoying me is, I'm getting married in April and have hired carers to bring mum to the wedding, but every week she says she wants to come down the day before. She won't understand that I won't have time to deal with her and listen to all the negative harping on, on my wedding day.
I've also told her several times I'm getting her an outfit for the day, but she keeps going on about wanting to wear some old black dress, which I know is covered in holes. Why are old people like this?

I'm reading this thread and am torn between the amusement it's obviously supposed to convey and very real distress.
People get old and go a bit loopy, it's a fact of life and one day your kids will doubtless be saying the same things about you and I know that you appreciate that you'll miss her when she's gone and all that, but do yourself a favour and try to bear with her because you'll remember all of the times you didn't when she is.
My mother was nothing short of an abusive bitch, however she is the only one I've got and for whatever her reasons were, she clearly did the best job she knew how to do, albeit that was sadly lacking.
I'd personally relish having memories of my mum bringing me out of date sardines and a mankey plastic clock, i'm sure she means well and if it's her way of trying to apologise for things in the past then accept it as such, however inappropriate, some people never even bother trying:)

Hi there puddicat,
Oddly enough one of our Grandosns MIL's (does that make sense?) is just like this.
He got so fed up that he changed the door locks so she couldn't get in (with the agreement of his wife).
It certainly pulled her up sharp, and even though she now does it to another of her Daughters, she doesn't do it to this couple.
Ever thought of changing the locks?

OK so she wasn't the perfect Mother but she is trying so hard to make up for it ,help her by being generous enough to accept her love albeit el cheapo tomato soup etc .
I'll guarantee you'll be similar when you are her age and then what????
