I am growing gourds to use to make birdhouses. My question is, what can be done to make annual clean out easier than trying to remove old nesting materials through the small entrance hole.

Don't the birds do the "spring-cleaning" themselves and rebuild the nest using at least part of the old materials?

No, you should clean out nesting boxes to get rid of flea and parasites.
