Ordinary catflap does not keep out visiting cats from neighbourhood gardens ..... woke to find a strange cat in my bedroom at 4am this morning, fighting with resident cat!
Do magnetic catflaps work or will I need the infra-red type to keep my 2 cats the sole feline residents of castle diddlyquauqua? Any experiences, preferences?
I have been through so many types of catflap and none of them seem to work. There is either something wrong with the flap itself or the cat chews off the collar device. All insundry come into my house including the local fox according to my dad!
I have a magnetic catflap which works absolutely fine. The only problem would be if a neighbours cat also had one because as the cat wears a magnet on its collar they would operate any magnetic catflap. If the cats that are coming in your house don't have magnets on their collars then you should be fine. If they do or don't want to take a chance then get an infra red one.
Thank you Wolf for the microchip option, I hadn't heard of those before & both cats have microchips, so should be ideal as I wasnt keen on having magnets around their necks.
However, a bit on the pricey side so I may go with the magnetic one and see how it performs and swap to microchip if it doesn't do well.
My two girls both have microchips and I decided to go with the microchip cat flap (petporte).. ok, it wasn't cheap but neither of the girls have to wander around with a heavy collar on them anymore (they do have a lightweight collar and name tag) and they feel really secure knowing that no other cat can get into their home.. Incidentally, it hasn't really worked out that expensive cos the magnets that my previous cats wore - and frequently lost - were quite pricey .
