I will usually round the price up so if it is 13.50, they will get 50p (possibly 1.50 if they have thrown in prawn crackers), if its 16.80, 1.20 but 12.20 they would only get 80p.
Not a lot i know, but on the basis I normally tip about 10% in a restaurant (for good service) I don't think that they shoudl get more than that comparitively speaking.
I do give tips, but hate having to do so. There are such strange customs about who you tip and how much, for example you tip a taxi driver, but not a bus driver, you tip a waiter, but not the chef, and you do not tip loads of people who do worthwhile jobs eg teachers, nurses etc.
Some restaurants encourage you to add a gratuity to your credit card payment, and then keep it instead of passing it on to the staff. It is a hopeless situation.
Personally I would like to see an end to all tipping, and the people who do the jobs being paid properly in the first place.
