An egg would hatch into a chick, but a chick would have to lay the egg.

I think what squarebear means is that a dinosaur could have layed the egg and out hatched a chicken which was a new evolved species of dinosaur. Good theory I think, makes the most sense if you ask me.

Yes, that's what I mean. Something slowly evolved into a chicken that laid the first egg.

Eggs have remained pretty much the smae since time began but animals have evolved greatly.
