The problem with cheaper ink jet printers is the head gets blocked if it is not used regularly.
If you can remove the head, stand it on kitchen paper in a saucer of water (only a couple of millimetres deep) for a couple of hours. New heads can cost more than new printers.
My recommendation for ink jet printers is Cannon. I rarely use them, having a colour laser printer, but needed to get my Cannon ink jet out of the loft recently after 4 years. It printed perfectly first time without needing priming or head cleaning.
