What happens to the marriage certificate when a couple divorce? My new employer wants to see it as part of a CRB check as they are not happy with the names on my birth certificate. I seem to remember that my ex and I had to give the marriage cert to the solicitors at the time and all I have is a copy of the decree nisi from the court at the time ?

Not sure what happens to it, I think it is retained by the Court. however, you can get a copy from the Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths.

you can order a copy on line - as long as you know the date, place, book number and page number it only costs 7.00.....

I have just had my crb check and I had a choice of what documents to show. So I am supprised they are saying they want to see your marriage certificate in particular. And what are they not happy about on your birth certificate? surely it is what it is?? and has your name on?

HI cassa333, believe or not , they want the name on my birth cert to match my current name, but unless i got married at birth, that's never going to happen is it ? donkeys!!!
I have my marriage certificate from my first marriage. You can get a copy from the Register Office.
I had to give my marriage certificate to the solicitor when I got divorced.
I kept my marriage cert at all times ,did not hand it to anyone, only showed first time to start divorce but you will beable to get a copy though
i came very close to divorce and my marriage cretificate was handed to the solicitor however it didn't go thru, we jsut went to the regisrty office we got married in and got a copy of it we had to pay the fee though - good luck
keenanthomps - im surprised you have your original marriage certificate. It is handed in when you start divorce proceedings and kept by the court. You can get a copy over the counter at the county court that handled your divorce although usually they charge (5 if you know your details - case number; 40 if you dont).
