6:30pm on monday, couldn't put myself through the trauma of watching hollyjokes so decided to switch over to the news on BBC1 only they were showing an episode of My Family which, is much better than the news but any idea why ?

It was because of the 24-hour strike by BBC staff. Some regional news programmes didn't go ahead at all, and the main BBC national news had to be done by BBC News 24, the satellite channel.
