I sold my old car about a year ago for 50, it was unroadworthy, no mot or tax and was parked on private land. It was a scrap dealer who had come knocking on the door a couple of times who I sold it to. We both filled in the relevant parts of the reg document he took his bit away and I posted mine to the DVLA. I have now received a failure to relicense vehicle letter from DVLA enforcement, saying I have to pay penalty if the vehicle does not have a valid tax disc or declared SORN. I can't remember the persons name who I sold it to now. Am I still liable for this, and can I write to the DVLA basically what I have told you. On the reply note I have from them I have to put who I sold it to and the date.Since selling it I don't live at the address the car was registered to, but luckily the people living there passed the mail on to me. thanks for any help
I've also published this in motoring

Yes, you are still liable. It is not up to DVLA to prove your slip didnt get there but you to prove it did
However, it will do harm to call/write to them and let them know details - if you write, and for future reference, send it recorded delivery

thnks pink kittens, do you mean it will do no harm to write/call :)
Had the same problem a few years ago but luckily this was to a private buyer. I was getting pretty frustrated because they will not take your phone calls but i wrote to them explaining all the circumstances (luckily i had lots of proof) and the DVLA agreed to let it go.

Write to them....it can't do any harm

Good luck
I had a similar thing a few years back concerning speeding tickets - I'd sold the car months before, and sent of the change details.

I contacted DVLA who couldn't have been more helpful, and they - and ticket issuer - accepted it wasn't down to me.
LOL, yes 'it will do NO harm
good luck
I had exactly the same thing happen with an old Astra I scrapped. I rang the DVLA and they accepted that I HAD scrapped it and I didn't have to pay the 80.00.
