How much does the star sign affect you compared to hereditary factors.
 I'm cancer and it's true what they say about scorpios and cancers being in a tumultuous relationship, and yet we have much in common and like the same subjects. ( and can get on well)

well, I'm Pisces but I... ain't psychic, haven't got interesting eyes, am not specially creative, don't start rumours, don't run away from problems, do say no on matters of principle, don't self-destruct, am very hard to lead... I do feel more comfortable with money in the bank but am unimpressed by the claim that many Pisces have experienced early poverty - is that really specific to people born in Feb/March?? I don't teach, nurse or drink much. Really truly, this couldn't be less me (thank goodness).

I am Capricorn... A  workaholic with bad knees. Distant and reserved but completely loyal to those who bear with me and stick at it!! Moon in Saggitarius means I cannot keep still for long, and want to constantly be travelling, moving house, aiming for new things far away... I'm a classic Scorpio.  A lot of scorpian traits don't particularly positive but I'd agree with all of these-

Postive: Secretive, self critical, a piercing nature, inquisitive, passionate, persistent and resolute, captivating, vigorous, loving, passionate, sensual, sympathetic and intense.
Negative: Jealous, a moody changeable nature, suspicious, sadistic and secretive.

My boyfriend is Cancer and fairly typical too I think, he's a sensitive soul, bless him but can get very p*ssed off!-

Positive: Kind, helpful and caring, sympathetic to need, domesticated, intuitive and protecting.
Negative: Easily hurt, jealous and possessive, remains insulted, selfish and self centred, inward looking, overbearing, cranky and irritable.

thanks very much every one. Loved your answers. I've come to the conclusion that we inherit our basic personalities but there may be some  truth in influence from the stars.

My friends mother took up astrology to prove it wrong(she's vindictive like that) and found that the oppostie was true. Star signs in magazines are bogus as they all assume that you are born at midnight on the 23rd of the month, usually in a capital city. If you have a propper one done, with exact dates. times and places, the more acurate the better. It is astonishingly acurate. There is always the problem of self fulfilling prophesy, but I don't think so many cultures would have kept it in some form or other if it was false. Unless you're a conspiracy theorist :D

I read some time ago that the very first people to write the newspaper horoscope versions were the journalists themselves. they simply made things up to keep the public interested.  I realize avocado that this is not what you are talking about, I just thought it was an interesting titbit.
