On both of my lad's BMX and mountain bikes the same fault has appeared...... you turn the pedals, the chain engages with the rear cogs, but the wheels don't turn.

What's the problem please?

Is the chain on both sets of Cogs?

Is the bike properly in gear?

Are the brakes jammed?

Could be loads of things.

Yes
Yes- BMX has no gears
No
if it's turning the rear cog and the wheel is not turning then the rear hub must be faulty (or more likely just dirty and not engaging)
Brakes jammed on ?
Chain too slack?
Are you turning the pedals the wrong way? They will spin while the wheel stays still that way.
take it to a bike shop, check the spindle, it might be too tight on the bearings, it might need loosening off and greasing
I'm certainly not turning the wrong way
I wish someone would loosen my nuts and grease my gear
but stay away from my rear hub ....

I'm dirty - but still engaging ;-)

the wheels on the bike go ......
most likely the bearings are gone in the axel so the cog is turning but not actually gripping to engage a forward movement...replace axel and bearing set...
