Has anyone been recently?  Is it suitable for a family (2 x 13yrs).  I have been to Yugoslavia way back in 1985 but things have obviously changed a lot since then!  Where is nice area to stay, I am looking to stay in a quality hotel, ie 4* or 5*.  Will it be lovely and hot in August?  Are the people friendly, is there any trouble out there.  Thanks.

Nice and hot. People are friendly and there's no trouble (I assume you're thinking of the coast; I haven't been to the inland part but I'm told it's a lot poorer and a bit less welcoming.) . Only sandy beaches are in the deep south near Albania, though; the rest are mostly pebbly.
Croatia, in particular Split, Dubrovnik or any of the islands are beautiful!  You will not regret your trip!  People are friendly, sights are breathtaking and food DELICIOUS!
