What are the main theories behind the striking simarities (eg the similar looking pyramids/hieroglyphics etc.) between the Ruins located in Mexico & Egypt? (and too a much lesser extent the ruins in indochina?)

Historically, I believe Egyptian ones developed from putting one tomb building on top of another, while Mexican ones started out as temples on small plinths - in each case, buildings were just built higher than their predecessors. The ones at Teotihuacan are more like Egyptian ones - square base - but there are only a handful, as the people who built them seem to have vanished. I think Pinotage is right: if early societies wanted to build high, step pyramids would have been the obvious way to do it.
