Its for the Champions of the FIFA World zones (S.America,Europe,Asia etc) Plus the World Champions(Italy) and hosts (South Africa)

They play it in the country where the next World Cup is a year before the Finals to test the stadia etc.

Because we didn't even qualify for the finals tournment. The winner of which (Spain) represents the Europeans in the Confederations Cup.

So why did we play in it in France in 1997? Forgive me but I don't recall us winning any trophies in the last 40+ years!!

Sorry my mistake - I just have a recollection of us winning the Lions tour, beating the Aussies in a test match & beating Brazil in a football tournament within about 2 weeks in 1997 - obviously not the Confederations cup!!
