Quizmail 33 & D
I'm struggling on the id of the two guys pictured in no 33 and letter D. They obviously have the same 'surname', but I have no idea who either is. Is anyone prepared to give a clue to either's identity.
Thanks

The deadline for quizmail submission, is passed so giving the answer directly is not spoiling it as you now can't enter. Also as stated the surname was NOT required as 33 had to match D by process of elimination - therefore the answer was already known and the surname was sought after curiosity.
Secondly, how do you go to a library and look up a picture when you have no idea who it is? Do they have a book called 'Pictures that may be featured in a Quiz'?, cos if so then I apologise.
The complainers of this site love to say how wonderful the library is - and it is to a degree, like any resource - but how so for a question where you have to match pictures of people with the same surname when you may not know the person and therefore their surname?
Yours in hope of a reply

I can't get over how antagonistic some people are on here. Whats the point.
Wisemother was quite clear and so was Maninblack.
He knew the required answer just not the detail.
However this site is surely set up for this, It seems that some people just want to be here to argue.
And know I do not want an argument :0-
Still, considerably fewer Quizmail answers have been given away this month - only a handful (so far!). Last month it was about 60, thanks mainly to "stormin".

Indeed you are quite right, lost track of the days!
However that does not take away from the points already made, in that the answer wasn't 'spoilt' as that was already done in the question linking 33 with D and how does the library help.
My question will no doubt remain unanswered as I have questioned the complainers previously (and politely) with no success.Though I agree with stevee, I dont want a war, just some understanding into how some people think!
Ah well

That's the point I'm making, as I say above. I'm pointing out - mainly to postalquiz, i suppose - that the answer is already given in the question, and so wisemother is not really to blame for 'spoiling' the answer, merely confirming it. Although isn't that the point of this site, that we have all registered for.
My library point still remains unaddressed, though I expected this to be honest!
We do seem to be in agreement about wisemother's role in this. I slightly misunderstood your previous posting - sorry!
I don't disagree with your library point either. How can you 'look up' an image? I very much doubt whether my local library contains an image of Peewee Herman anyway! And some people don't find it easy to get to a library.
and that is of course, if you know that it is PeeWee Herman in the first place, which is also my point.
Fair enough if you know the surname of one of the pictures is Herman, you can then look up other Hermans and hope for the best, as I did for some of these. But I too was left with 33 and D so plumped for it, after linking all the other pairs. Now I know but submitted on Saturday so it doesn't really matter.
That's why I wanna know postalquiz's opinion. I hope its not just complain first, think about it later.
Thank you all for your considered replies. I had not responded earlier as I was busy in meetings. However to answer the point made regarding the use of a library for picture questions.
I would suggest the following:
If Maninblack had eliminated the other photographs he would have known that the person he was looking for was American Film and Television Comedy. Equally he would have been looking for (from the left hand column) American Film Music. His library may well have had books such as the Cinema Year by Year or others of a similar nature. The index in that book would have given him a number of people whose surname began with H (which was probably a good starting point and accurate as it transpired). From there it would have been a matter of researching those names.
This is normal procedure for me in researching the quizzes I take educated guesses and then further research that supposition. It may at times prove to be erroneous but equally can prove the answer I had thought of.
If the books failed to produce the required evidence then the local reference library will have microfiches of national newspapers back to good hard work going through those until you find the right match.
Hopefully this explains how the library resources can be used to validate and research answers to Mldrs satisfaction. (Continued in next posting)
In case anyone feels that this cant be done in the time allowed, let me assure them that I work full time Monday to Friday and often have to give up time on my Saturdays to travel (the not inconsiderable distance) to the reference library. I do it because I take a personal pride in finding those elusive answers. I do not just throw up my hands in frustration and ask for hints (or even worse answers) on here.
Mldr in his most recent contribution poses the question understanding how people think. I am afraid I am equally bemused by that as I cannot imagine why in a competition people would give hints and answers to all and sundry.
A better question to be posed by those frustrated in finding answers would be to ask for help in how to research (and I dont mean someone saying look at a certain page in a certain book) but in far more general terms. Hopefully I have already demonstrated how that could be done in my explanation of how I went about researching the subject of this thread at the library.
As has already been pointed out to Mldr the deadline had not passed a point which Mldr has now conceded.
With regard to Maninblacks comment about rarely posting asking for hints, I can accept that. I can however assure him that I have never asked for any help on here. I wonder if Phil Smith is one of the posters? He seems to find the answers every month. I can at least take pride that I have been able to match his scores in the past.
Finally (and I apologise for the length of this posting) I trust that Mldr will find that I have answered all his points in this posting. I do not recall him ever asking me to comment in the past but trust he will now accept that I am willing to justify my criticism of the actions of some posters.
Excellent answer postalquiz, thank you. I dont believe our paths have crossed, so the questions Ive have previously asked were not necessarily to you, youre just the only one to date to give an answer. Youre tips are most useful.
However, I don't like using the terms 'lazy' or 'idle' (not that you have) as we don't know how much work was put in, so who are we to judge. Also, not everyone that does the quiz may be able-bodied enough to get to a library or has a reachable library. I do concede that youre right in that some (not all) people arent committed enough to the quiz to give up an entire Saturday to travel and go to a library, especially for that one last question! Maybe they think we all pay our fee and most of us have no chance of winning, but well still contribute to the winner's prize. We can't all be Phil Smith, but at least we'll send in a sheet with 150 answers, right or wrong.
I have another question though, which you may have an opinion on. Why do people that think this site is lazy/cheating feel the need to actually register? You can read posts without registering and so should have no need to register to a site and interact with people that annoy you so. Unless you want to post an answer/question there is no need at all to register. Finding the site through google doesn't make you register either. So why join? Surely not just to complain at peoples researching methods?
Hi Postalquiz, a most impressive answer but you appear to have let the cat out of the bag a little. For months now you seemed to genuinely have the quiz's welfare at heart; however, part of your last posting throws doubt on your seemingly well intentioned motives.
You are apparently one of the '150 Club' and may be keen to ensure that you and Phil Smith (who one has to admire) remain in an exclusive club with as few members as possible.
So it is perhaps sour grapes on YOUR part that anyone gaining any assistance on this site may increase their chances of getting 150 once in a while.
The point you seem to miss though is that if everyone could boast the 'Holmes' like powers of deduction that you possess, everyone would get 150, Phil Smith would no longer be champion because we all would be. I don't resent the fact that you can do it, you should be commended. Nevertheless, the amount of answers you can achieve from your library is dependent on the resources of the library.
In addition to this, not everyone has the benefit of only working Monday to Friday, I consider that to leave a somewhat luxurious period of free time per week.
I did get a clue from here thisw month which led to me getting an answer. This answer will contribute to our score of 148. It will rob you of nothing, and leave the prize money to you and of course Phil Smith who, it appears doesn't, feel the need to visit this site. GOOD LUCK all the same Postalquiz, I wish you well.
Oh dear, I seem to have sparked a bit of a debate. Apologies; in Bernard Bresslaw's famous words 'I only asked!'
If it upsets so many people I won't bother again. The last time I managed to get 150 and was in the big money (10) was about 4 years ago, so I'm not going to challenge the megabrains.
To those who I seem to have upset by asking the question my sincere apologies but the rewards for getting the correct answer are hardly worth it really, are they?
I hope you will continue to ask questions - that what this forum is for, isn't it?? The reason your particular question generated a bit of heat is, as I've said before, that you revealed your answer to Q33 in the course of asking your question. Others recognized your answer as the correct one, and felt that the quiz had been devalued ever-so-slightly.
I would also encourage users of this site to take with a pinch of salt claims made by those seeking help. I'm sure this doesn't apply to you, Mr Maninblack, but anyone can post stuff like "I'm a pensioner, I do Quizmail on my own, I've never scored more than 130, I need help with one question...." WE DON'T KNOW WHO THESE PEOPLE ARE. They might be Phil Smith for all we know!
And, Dear AB users, if you do take pity on someone and decide to help them with a hint or an answer, never forget that you are probably helping a lot of others as well, people who perhaps don't need or deserve your help! I think it does damage Quizmail if everybody is told some of the answers. Perhaps there should be a facility on the site to provide a "personal answer".
