Try toothpaste it may freeze the nerve ends
I had a similar thing a few weeks ago looked on the net and a popular one seemed to be vanilla, i didn't have any so i can't verify if it works.
leejaysmum, go to boots, they sell a temporary filling kit you can put in yourself, i bought one on holiday last year and it lasted ages, until i got appointment! I think it was about 7 quid.

good luck, you have my sympathy, there's nothing worse than toothache!! :)

also, you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together (each every four hours), so if you take one lot, then two hours later alternate it with the other type, it will prolong the pain relief.

Jack daniels on a cotton wool bud .
I was told toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Put a blob where the filling should be.

It won't do any harm if it doesn't work.
If you can't do philippa.d's solution, a bit of sugar free chewing gum stuck into the hole may at least keep hot and cold liquids out, which are probably the main irritants.
