Download from Radio4 to cassette or CD

I know I can go to the website and listen to a program that I missed. How can I record it to a cassette or CD so I can listen to it on a Walkman type machine when I have a sleepless night? I have heard of I-Pods but never seen one. If that is the answer, how big/small does it have to be and what else do I need and how does it work? Please help me!

What type of file does it download as?
In Windows Explorer, if you don't already see the siffix at the end of the filename click Tools > Folder Options
then the "view" tab and uncheck the "hide extensions for known file types".

Is it something irritating such as .rm or .ram ?

My husband has a Creative MP3 player which also has radio and you can record on it aswell as download. It's very small and uses an AAA battery.

I may be wrong but I don't think that you can record it over the net 'cos it's like streaming video and you're not allowed access to the 'source file' but you will need to use a software interface to listen to it.

To literally record to a cassette, just connect the line-out on your computer to the line-in on your cassette recorder. If you don't have a lead for this, you can pick one one quite cheaply in any hi-fi/electrical goods shop, or down your local market.

if using windows, you can use "sound recorder" to record whatever sound is going through your sound card at the time. Sound recorder is built into Windows. Hunt around in the start menu.

This will save as a .wav file or an .mp3.

Your copy of windows should tell you how to record in the help files.
