Pests in the home

Can anyone tell me if those plug-in electronic pest control devices actually work and if they do, is there any scientific evidence to support this?

I bought one for my daughters bedroom as she is terrified of spiders - it had two frequencies one for insects one for mice. I think it works in the vicinity of her bed where she keeps it (although the mosquito net helps a lot) but it certainly does not work over the large area it claims to.
