Transferring files

I am about to start a digital photography course with the Open University, and they have sent me a start-up pack which consists of a DVD and a CD Rom. The DVD is no problem as I have an elderly AppleMac I can view those on but my main computer is a PC laptop. It's CD reader no longer works and I've been told by a technician at PC World that the Optical drive has died. I rang round several shops and was told that I could get an external drive for about £60 - unfortunately I haven't got that sort of money to spend at present and I would hardly use it in any case. What I wondered was can I get a friend to run it on her pc and put it onto a memory stick, which I then download onto my PC - would this work? (The CD cannot be used with the Mac unless I buy one especially for it and I haven't got the money to do that either!) Any (sensible) suggestions gratefully received! Thanks.

How about contacting your tutor (or whoever) at the OU, they're supposed to be very helpful and should be able to help you get around the problem - maybe they'll have a version that can be downloaded...

yes, putting the contents of the CD onto a memory stick and running it from there does normally work with most things

Jumbuck - I rang OU today and spoke to one of the tecnical team, but all he told me was that although they provide the program, they only do the one for PC's and if I wanted one for the Mac I'd have to get it myself..
