sorry but i did not catch the name. but hear this. it is played by moving your right hand around an antenna and u control the volume with your left hand by change the distance between your hand and a large metal ring (another antenna i suppose) it was invented in 1920. does anybody know what it is called and maybe if it is possible to build ones own. i love electronics and would like to give this a bash. if it was invented in 1920 then it can't be that complicated.

any help appreciated

thanks

Hello,

I think you're after a "theremin".  I saw Bill Bailey the comedian play one at the Edinburgh Festival a few years back - he was very good. Try this website to see if this is what you're after:

Sounds like you're talking about the Theremin, the Beach Boys used one on Good Vibrations IIRC and Bill Bailey uses a couple in his stage shows. A quick Google leads us to http://www.thereminworld.com/ which should be enough to keep you going for a while  ;-)

A more advanced version of the "theremin" is the Ondes Martenot, developed in France in the 1930's.If you Google for it you can see it in depth.
