my dog fell off the window and was limping (last year) he limped for a week and I knew bless him he had sprained it. I just I said I would wait cos he was going fine on 3 legs and after a week it was unbelievable he was great - never went to vet although I have insurance blah blah - he got better himself. I did bathe his leg in salted warm water.
At 16 it could be anything.
I would take him back to the vet and ask what they intend to do next. (I presume the vet gave you a follow up appointment?)
The metacam should have kicked in by now and a simple sprain should be showing signs of getting better.
It could be the vet was waiting to see if the swelling would go down before x-raying the leg.
