Is there any truth in the 'myth' that when Da Vinci was painting the Last Supper he painted a person from the street, who 'modelled' for him, as Judas, and then, years later when he came to paint Jesus in the picture, he chose 'another' random man from the street who again 'modelled' for him, and it turned out to be the same man he painted as Judas?  I just wondered if this was fact or fiction. Thanks.

According to Snopes ( http://www.snopes.com/glurge/lastsupp.htm ) there are no records to detail who sat for da Vinci and the story typically says that in the intervening years, the Christ sitter had been imprisoned after falling into penury (or worse). Often figures like ten or more years are quoted for how long it took between Jesus' being painted and Judas being painted but this is absolute rubbish; it was only a short time for the entire work to be completed. So, in short, it's rubbish!

I thought it sounded a bit didgy.  It was good while it last though.  Thanks, Waldo!

Question Author
That should of course be dodgy.  Is didgy a word?

I agree with Waldo.

However what is just as interesting is,Da Vinci DID use people from the street, and not professional models. When he saw a face he liked,he just asked them to pose for him.

If you think some of the men in his paintings are very good looking,Da Vinci was gay so it's no surprise.

Now a question (for Waldo and all) there is a theory that the Mona Lisa was painted using a MALE model, any comments?

ARSENAL you did well to correct didgy - as Rolf Harris will tell you, if you say didgy, redo.
