i would like to try yoga, but my body is not very flexible, and dont think i would be able to get into some of the positions, dont want to make a fool of myself do you think it would be worth me giving it a try?
Hi First and foremost yoga is great, I found myself in a similar position to you in that for some reason I am not very flexible, but wanted to do yoga, so what I did was to get hold of a yoga book, select a number of poses which I think I could do, then I did them religiously every day and after a period of time your body adjusts and becomes more flexible.
They wont expect you to know anything, if you want to join a class, join a class at first it will be tough, but stick with it and you will be amazed how much better you will feel.
I would urge you to join a class to get proper tuition. Books and DVDs are good however an instructor can make sure that you carry out the poses correctly.
Perhaps you could speak to the instructor ahead of the class and I am certain they will cater for the novice.
Full of admiration for you, go to a class , speak to the instructor and believe me you will soon loosen up.
Remember everyone else was a beginner once . good ljuck.
I took up yoga over ten years ago. Best thing I ever did. At the time I could not bend down enough to get my hands much below my knees. It takes time for your body to change but if you keep at it the results will happen.
It is much easier to maintain motivation in a class and there are many subtlties that you will miss in a book that a teacher will point out. It isn't about achieving picture perfect postures. Everyone is different and all that matters is that you push yourself a little beyond yout limits each time and build an awareness of your body.
It will make your body hurt and it is vitally important to continue doing some strectches for the next couple of days after the class. Otherwise you will get very stiff and sore.
Please go to a class, you can do yourself a doing without the proper instruction. you yourself will not be able to see if you have got the pose right. Classes are great, I have never been to one that was intimidating and full of gym bunnies, in fact the complete opposite, it is a great exercise for everyone. Have fun and enjoy.
