Television series from early 90s

For some reason, this is driving me mad. I watched a TV series around 93/94 on British TV. It was about a manic American TV stand up comic, working in the UK, with a sort of death wish. (It wasn't a comedy). His mother had drowned herself and his sister when he was young. She was a hippy and reckoned she was going to the Land of Dreams. The opening scene featured the song Stay With Me Baby, as the mother walked into the sea. I know, it sounds gruesome. But can anyone else remember it?

It was a series by Linda LaPlante called "COMICS" the tagline was "Dead Funny". A serious an disturbing potrayal of a talented comic who just couldn't overcome his demons. In one scene he's in the dressing room and someone asks him if he want's anything, without realising that he's a recovering alcoholic, among other things, and he thinks about it and then cracks and orders a bottle of vodka and some beers. Later goes on stage drunk and gives a totally bullying cringe worthy performance.
Very gutsy series.
