1a is the clue fair? Yes, just because a particular word isn't part of your normal vocabularly does not make the clue unfair.
You make some very good points mintyman - 31 certainly needs an anagrind to accompany 'Mao'. 27 is definitely the 'one case' referred to in thepreamble, and although Chambers Word Wizard does give another arrangement of the same letters, I think this must be a proper noun. Although the preamble doesn't say so, 10 can clearly be placed within the theme word to make another, as well as preceding it. Still not convinced that 14 is a sound clue, though the answer is clear at least.

'Breakfast' = cereal ('mouth' = homophone)
Thanks Mysterons. I get it now. The Spectator crossword is generally very accurate. There is not normally a redundant syllable in a clue. But there are here. Too many 'of's. Oh dear, I sound very grumpy.
We have had Muso before, but he/she is obviously inexperienced - which is why there's an editor... As there is no single solution for 25 DOWN I will be saving my pennies this week and not bothering to submit. I await the 'official' solution.

Looks like we were expected to treat the title as a pointer to ring-tone !
