I have seen items on eBay for free pay per view, you bid a couple of pounds and they send you instructions on how it works? anyone come across this ?

It's a scam and banned on ebay. Use Google, you'll get the same result.

if its the one im thinking about you get 'free' box office upto �50 then you have to connect your sky box back up to the phone line at which point sky bills you for what you have watched(�50)
