A database? Just a set of information ordered in some way. On a computer, you will usually find tables, each of which contain records. For example, a person table might have fields names name, address, phone, and sex. A record will then contain information for one person. Like John, 2 Something road, 13134134, male.

Databases are particularly useful as you can relate items from different tables together. Allowing things like searches to be more powerful.
