A friend told me that if you spray some deo on a zit, it helps it go away. Is this true or am I being taken for a ride??

Toothpaste helps - I know that much.  It dries out the spot.  I personally wouldn't spray deo on my face, although in theory it would stop your pores from sweating!! Would't get rid of the grease and bacteria that we all have, nthat cause spots though!
I have heard after shave helps get rid of spots, its something to do with the alcohol it drys the spots.  :-)
Try hydrogen peroxide on spots, especially if they are 'open' - very cheap from the chemist. It's a mild bleach (don't worry!) and will clear up spots, although it stings at first and makes them 'white' but is a good strong antiseptic. Hydrogen Peroxide is also good on cuts and grazes, as is Tea Tree Oil. Think Tea Tree Oil might be too greasy for spots though.
Tea tree oil is a key ingredient in many spot remedies judiewudie.  :-)  My "spot wand" from Boots is tea tree oil and witch hazel.  It (TT oil) may be too greasy in its natural or pure form mind you - as you suggested! :-)
