With the Klez virus, merely opening a message, and not the attachment, or viewing the message in a preview pane with Outlook or Outlook Express enables the virus to infect your system. see this site; http://www.temple.edu/cs/virusinfo/klezvirus.html or Symantec for more important information.

I've had klez for a while now despite having up-to-date virus protection and running the remove klez utility from Symantec several times. I think I got from a Kazaa download so it serves me right. I now have to bite the bullet and rebuild my sytem for what seems the thousanth time!. If people like these virus writers focused their obvious talents on good things we would have a cure for cancer by now (maybe).
Have you tried using The Cleaner by Moosoft? it's free for a trial version and it's really good at removing viruses.
Many of these viruses (virii?) target Microsoft products specifically, so I use other suppliers' email and browsers, as well as having anti-virus protection of course. Tough on Microsoft if everyone did that, but I don't suppose they will.
Thanks for the suggestion coemgen: I ran it and it said I was clean (but I don't believe it). I think I will change over to Linux: RedHat 8 looks pretty good to me and I think they only have I virus threat. I expect only the gaming will suffer. Either that or dust down me old Mac.
The Klez virus will certainly be picked up by Sophos software, I've seen it happen. Also, if you have the latest security upgrade to Outlook and Outlook express that will close the loophole that allows the virus to run it's exe attachment without clicking on it. Keep you system up to date and you will not be at too much of a risk! Get the upgrades from here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.
