cant view some pictures stored on laptop

i think i cant view them as they were taken on old mobile phone, i have chenged laptops since, i cant recall which makes and model mobiles i had ... help as need to find these picures...

The default file format used by cameras and mobile phones is jpeg, which has the '.jpg' file suffix.

Select Start > Search, and select 'search all files and folders. Enter your search term as '*.jpg ' (without the quote marks). That will find every jpeg file on your PC, irrespective of whether they're in a folder called 'Nokia', 'My Pictures' or anywhere else.

Of course, if you never actually transferred the pictures from your old laptop to your new one, nothing you can do will make them magically appear.

i cant view them, there is a repeated computer produced picture where they should be and there are some with just part of the photo showing...

I've just noticed that my use of quote marks has made that search term difficult to read. Here it is again:

Sounds like a good example of file corruption to me! (mainly due to the "part picture showing")

So, you've found the files but they're not viewable. The chances are that the files have become irretrievably corrupted but it might be worth trying to open them in a different program. (If they display properly, use the 'Save as' option to create new, non-corrupt files). Try opening them in Irfanview:

You could try some image recovery software. Search for 'image recovery' here:
http://download.cnet.com/windows/
However the results of using such software aren't always very good. (That's why you should always back up all of your files in the first place!)

Worth doing a check disk first in case it's the FAT that's gone haywire.

Open my computer (computer on vista) right click on the drive the photos are stored on (probably C:) select properties and then click the tools tab and then on the "check drive for errors" button.

It might require you to restart the laptop, and the check may take an hour or more depending on hard drive size,

... and if you download Irfanview, make sure you also get the plugins file. The plugins include the ability to open many obscure file formats.

everyone is being so helpful.... i am a bit slow using the answerbank,so cant comment quick enough, another thing to mention is i have had to reboot my laptop as had computer error, dell man did loads fault diagnostics and had to set up laptop from scratch as couldnt sort out problems with it, i have got an external hardrive which may have some photos on, will compare them, if they are corrupt to them will look at the options given....

yes using vista and when had laptop problems dell man did say vista caused problems like this, am i better changing from vista, if so any recommendations would be appreciated
