My tom cat has started spraying.What is it he sprays?,it smells stronger than urine.Whats the best way to get rid of the smell,he does it in certain parts of the house.

Tom cats spray a mixture of scent (for marking) and urine. The best way to get rid of the smell is to stop him from spraying. There are products available such as the Feliway diffusser that should help to prevent any spraying. As for cleaners; most vet hospitals and large pet chains will have products that will cut the smell. The one I use the most is called Get The Odor Out spray. I like it because it is odorless. You could try Skunk-off or KOE as well. Make sure the sprayed area is thoroughly cleaned as he is more likely to spray in an area that he has already been at. If you are planning on neutering him, do it ASAP as neutered toms don't spray if you can catch them before they make spraying a habit.

Use biological washing powder to remove stains and odours.  I'd advise neutering him to try and stop this, but you'll only find it helps if he's quite young still.

Thanks I think he will be too old now to stop it with neutering (2 1/2).Hes only just recently started doing it.I will get down to the pet shop and have a look what products they have.

A good one that I saw on How Clean Is Your House and I can actually vouch for is tea tree oil, bicarbonate of soda and hot water. 

Put about two heaped tablespoons of bicarb in a bucket, add a few drops of the tea tree oil, and then half fill with boiling water.  Either mop over the area or add some cold water and sponge away.  The tea tree acts as an antiseptic and antibacterial and it will get rid of the smell and the bicarb helps to get rid of any stains so you can use it on a carpet too.   Another thing that I have tried when I ran out of tea tree is lavender oil and its just as good and makes the room smell really nice.  Cats tend not to like the smell and wont or rather SHOULDN'T go back to the spot and mark again.
