Average speed cameras

Driving to and from Manchester yesterday I had to negotiate all the road works on the M6, which added 45 minutes onto my journey, because of the 50 mph restrictions with 'Average speed cameras'. My question is, how do they operate? Clearly, the majority of motorists keep under the 50 speed limit but there were some who didn't. Am I right in assuming that these cameras check your average speed between each set within the speed restriction? I'm sure someone's out there who works for the Highways Agency or similar who can answer my query.

You would think they could afford some decent cameras taking into account all the tax we pay!!

Not a bad little earner for Manchester £150,000 worth of fines in 6 hours. Most Specs locations I have seen have been for road works although can't say I've ever seen any actual work being carried out or for that matter any roadworkers.

If you do not exceed the speed limit then you have nothing to worry about.

having ANPR shouldn't the equipment be able to compare registrations with a database of stolen/untaxed/uninsured/known criminal use vehicles and alert the nearest available police unit?

do they only read the number plates of oncoming traffic thus giving immunity to speeding motorcycles?

the answer of course is to drive a car with foreign plates that are not on the UK database ....

with all the rubbish flying about these days an old newspaper could find itself covering the front number plate and held in place by the slipstream. ;-)

avrage speed cameras take a pic of every vehicle which gose on to a disc (cd) then when put into a computer it checks all the vehicles and times some cameras can not cross lane so if you change lanes after each camera your ok type avarage spped cameras in google it explains all
