Thinking of buying a cheap Saxo a 1.1 petrol or a diesel. Anyone with any experience of them who could say if they were reliable etc., and what to look out for when buying.

depends what sort of year, some of the earlier ones especially the 3 bolt wheels had awful brakes...

Any Saxo is good providing it has been serviced well Rowland, if you intend to bye, take someone with you that knows the working of a car.

All French cars are rubbish- look good and comfy but break down. Go for Japanese. Had a number of Nissan/Mitsubish and never any trouble at all for years.
