Characteristic sound of carrier, originally (5)

T-A-T

Looks like "TRAIT", which makes "characteristic" presumably the definition, but I don't get the cryptic allusion. Or am I just wrong ?

Pronounced tray?

Isn't it pronounced "trate"?

Oh I see. In the original French it is pronounced "tray". That must be it. Many thanks.

Of course "originally" it was latin, not French, from trahere...
It's originally a French word and tray is a carrier.
