Is it just a Neuro-surgeon that conducts the GCS, when the fingernails are pinched does it give intense pain and does the patient actually visualise immediately when this is performed?

Anybody can do it, nurses and any qualified doctor.
The trick is to interpret the response of the patient.
Painful response to the nails being "pinched" depends upon the level of consciousness.

Thanks for answers, qualified personnel can use it,what about basic first aiders, can they use this to arouse someone?
loopy....the object of the scale is NOT to "wake them up," but to assess if their level of consciousness is deepening or that they are that they are starting to recover consciousness.

It is an examination, not a form of treatment.

Thanks sqad, is it taught in first aid to arouse someone by pinching the nails? Need an answer ASAP.
loopy....I am not sure, but it is so simple to describe and perform that it doewn't need formal "teaching"
