windscreen wipers

Does anyone have any tips to clean windscreen wipers? I probably should get some new ones, but until I get around to it, Id be grateful for any advice.

It's the usual problem, they're quite smeary and don't sem to be doing a good job of getting rid of the water from the windscreen

Try washing up liquid on a sponge or soft duster along the edge of the wiper blade, they probably need replacing, though. I have recently put the JML blades on my car and they are very good.

Not much point cleaning the blades if the screen is not clean also, first time you use them the screen will just contaminate the blades again. Wash both with a solution of meths in hot water. Polish the glass dry with newspaper.

Hot water and some vinegar does the trick.

In addition to these tips, look for a product called Rain-go (at least here in the U.S.). One applies it to the windscreen, let it dry, buff it with a dry cloth and voila... causes the rain to bead up and move off the window in small rivulets.  I find it quite effective and only have to re-apply about every 3 months or so.  Most of the time I don't even use the windshield (U.S. term) wipers, because the rain moves off so well, but when they are turned on they clean much better...

I usually clean my wiper blades with meths.

You can get cheap replacements from discount stores (such as poundland). I've had some are they are very good.. I simply replaces the wiper blades though (not the whole wiper) and discard the rest. Look for those with 5 blades in one.

I've tried those cheap blades as suggested by Kev_UK and found that you only get what you pay for.  They hardly lasted any time at all.....get good quality blades and give them an occasional clean as per other suggestions.

Same here as ianess, ive gone through numerous sets of "last a lifetime" blades, you are better off paying for decent ones.

Buy new iones. They are not expensive. Avoid products such as rain away, costs more than new blades and once you stop useing it the screen smeers badly. Difficult to remove.
