we have been together over a year, he has always been there for me and always helped me through the hardest of times, why is this time different? i have tried to make him understand i wanted to be treated the same as usual and just to get on with it but he wont accept the fact that i need tablets

well understanding the condition and dealing with a GF who has it - are two different things.. the second requires emotional involvement.
He is young... and some men are not great at handling stuff like this...
Dont assume he can deal with it any better than you could.... maybe he needs time... or space....?

well then you need to ask him outright why the medication makes this any different...
Hopefully your illness will be solved and is just a short term thing and you wont have to be on the pills for too long. I would also maybe seek some CBT with a therapist too - as pills are not always the permanent solution to the underlying cause!
Go get some exercise.. eat well.. build up some confidence! 3 really easy things to do to help induce the positive chemicals in the brain..

Were the things he supported you with in the past related to nervous problems though? My stepfather's first wife (ie my mum was his second wife) had terrible depression and mental illness and he couldn't deal with anything like that at all for the rest of his life, even leaving the room if a film or TV programme alluded to it.
