New Year Break Algarve

My hubby and I are hoping to go to the Algarve 26th December for one week. Never been before.
We were thinking of maybe Vilamoura.
Can anybody recommend somwhere to stay, pref one bedroom apartment on self-catering basis, in a handy location for bars, restaurants etc (clubs not required!)
Or possibly somewhere in a nearby area?

The life is all down by the harbour in Vilamoura. The Old Village is where we stayed, which is further out but lovely. The villarenters website advertises a few privately owned apartments there, which are cheaper to rent than going through the tour operators and seem to be better kept.
