Is there a site where I can search for the number of matches a player has played at test and first class level without knowing a name? Both the archive sites I've just looked at need either a name or a team.

Try the List of........... on wikipedia. Ie the List of England test cricketers gives a full breakdown of tests /runs/wickets etc. I assume you have some criteria you are looking for.
