Is it possible that a cat can suddenly lose it's vocal capacity? My 13 year old Tom cat has seemingly lost the ability to 'meow' completely, he is just making a scratchy sound like a frog! He was ok a day or so ago and I did think he sounded odd yesterday but I have come home from work and he is like this! He is still able to purrr loudly and has eaten and had a drink.
That is just what it sounds like but I have never known a cat to have that before, I am worried he may have something wrong with his voice box, of cat';s have a voice box, I doubt they do actually.
Last year I started coughing loads and the vet said that I was asthmatic (probably allergic to Humans and my sister) so it shows that us cats can get all the nasty diseases that humans can get. My sister is stupid and there are zillions of stupid humans - so I rest my case.
My cat lost his voice a couple of years back, so I booked an appointment with the vet and got him into the car, then his voice miraculously reapperaed!! The vet thought this was very amusing but also said he had a chest infection, gave him some anti-biotics, his voice has been just fine ever since.
Awww. Hope hes ok Dot. Our cat lost his voice a few times. He looked like a goldfish, me owing but no sound coming out. He recovered though. Hope yours does too
our second cat used to be very vocal but was never quite so loud after contracting
tonsilitis. He had antibiotics from the vet, but his mew was never the same.
My old cat got hold of a chicken bone once, and after eating it his meow vanished - he just made a wee sort of whisper. It came back of it's own accord within a few weeks and we was none the worse for wear.
