Should this march be allowed?

A march through a part of Bradford is planned by the The English Defence League (EDL) during August bank holiday weekend.

Once again certain factions are trying to get it banned. Why is it it is always the so called 'Right Wing' that are the trouble makers, why not ban the Unite Against Fascism (UAF) who also plan a protest, and can be much more violent than the EDL.

West Yorkshire chief constable Sir Norman Bettison said he was taking the action after considering the "understandable concerns of the community".

The 'community' he is referring to of course is the Muslim community, the so called 'minorities'.

If the march is banned, which seems likely, and a static protest is allowed, I wonder if it will be allowed down Manchester Road, which is in a predominantly Muslim area of Bradford, after all I think that Bradford is predominately still an English city?

Walls were erected in Berlin and Northern Ireland to keep communities apart. Instead of trying to promote multiculturalism we are heading for a divided society and that means we will need to follow these examples.

The wall in German wasn't erected to keep warring communities apart. It was to stop the east Germans escaping the Communist tyranny. Hardly applies in this instance.

We are hardly at the erecting walls stage. There is not widespread murder and intimidation in Bradford or Birmingham like there was in Belfast.

My thoughts are thus:

It's impractical to suppress or try and prevent the EDL from operating. The reason for this is that - regardless of whether it's true or not - it does seem to have quite a wide image of being an organisation that espouses peaceful anti-Islamic protests.

If you try and counter that, I think we may very well find that a lot of Islamophobes - who won't even have necessarily been involved in the movement - may see what they think is a peaceful movement being managed aside and convince themselves that protesting peacefully is a bad or ineffectual idea, and pick up some other way to vent their feelings.

Just a thought.

But people have been saying that for ages. Enoch Powell most famously made such dire predictions, but more generally the 'man on the street' has been spouting doom-laden prophecies ever since he was first there to do it.

How do we know you're any more right than they were?

Another doom laden scenario, is that they deliberately pick areas with largely Asian/Muslim communities hoping that they population will retaliate back to their provocative marches, similar to what happens when the loyalists want to parade up streets in catholic areas of Belfast.

The EDL marches have largely been ignored so far, the only aggro being with AFL and not locals, but eventually they might get the riot they crave so much.

If you view scenes of past marches you will find it is not only the AFL who create the aggro, but they are also joined by a high number of locals (Muslims) and other factions..

The march through Muslims areas is absolutely and DEFINITELY provocative.

Yes - they should be free to march wherever they want, but if the police deems that the march may result in public order offences (either by the marchers or anti-marchers), then it's their duty to take action.

Would you also support the BNP marching through Notting Hill during the carnival?
