Asparagus.

I'm looking to fill some space in my allotment, & I have enough room to plant about 20 asparagus crowns. Has anyone on here planted them in autumn, or is it advisable to wait until spring?

Prepare your soil in the autumn dig over well and add as much manure and compost as you can spare, build up into ridges and in early spring cover with polythene to get the soil warm

you could try sheep manure instead of the usual horse if you can find it...bullsh*t is also good or chicken cr*p all poo is good as asparagus is a heavy feeder

... But be sure to select a variety suitable for planting in the fall. Here in the western U.S., we've successfully planted 'Crimson Pacific" (interesting color, as the name implies) and Pacific 2000 (I think it was developed in New Zealand).. there are others that will do well planted in warm soil...
You do realize that your not going to get a crop for at least two years (maybe three), don't you?

Thanks for your answers. The site I've selected is sheltered & has very good drainage, as it's next to a low-growing privet hedge. It also had spuds in it this year, so it will be well cultivated. Luckily, I have a friend with a couple of horses, so manure wont be difficult to get.
I also realise that I wont get a crop for a couple of years or so....good things come to those who wait...
