crickets
5 Answers
Our 2-acre garden has been zinging all over with the sound of crickets all summer, and still now that it is colder. We have lived here for 26 years, and I have never heard it so active with cricket colonies before. They sometimes come indoors (I evict them) and land on me when gardening. Roundish, brownish creatures with a long tail spike. Has anyone else had such a noticeable 'cricket season'?

However, for me, the significant increase in wildlife this year has been in the population of hares. Most summers I would expect to spot just a few hares in the fields as I drove along Suffolk's country roads. A couple of weeks ago I had to drive between a few villages and I had to brake every few hundred years to avoid a kamikaze hare (and there were dozens more to be seen in the adjacent fields). In some areas there now seem to be more hares than rabbits.

We only get pale green bush crickets here. (Like this 'un...)
