Stopping distances are calculated. S.D.=x squared over 20 plus x. where x is mph and S.D. is in feet. Have a look on google which will show that as well as the formula you also have to factor in today's better grip roads which are 67% (from 30% to 50%) better than when the original stopping distances were calculated in the 60's. (Using a Ford Pop or Anglia, I understand)
