hi all,

im in real pain tonight with tooth ache - back bottom teeth.

i took a 400mg ibrufen tablet about an hour and a half ago, but its not touched it.
can i take another, or do i have to wait 4 hours?

and is a single dose of 2 400mg tabs at one time too much?

im using extra strong oragel and have got a covered hot water bottle resting on my face to try and ease the pain which is now in the side of my face and up into my ear area... :o(

yes, I've had NHS Direct tell me I could alternate cocodamol (similar to paracetamol) and ibuprofen, a dose of one then two hours later of the other, but like woofgang says make sure you don't exceed the maximum dose of either.
gargle your tooth with water and salt
it should last for 4 .5 hours

aww thank you prudie,
earlier tonight i just didnt know what to do, my face and ear hurt with it...

ive taken the hot water bottle off it now after reading nox's reply,
and it is infact a little easier now.

i had it a few weeks ago,i think it was an infection in a problem tooth i have,
and i ended up going down to a&e as the pain was unbearable,
they gave me a course of antibiotics,
i took half of the course as it cleared up (i know youre meant to complete the course)
so, i have the remainder here, which i have started to take again...

so fingers crossed ..... ;o/
I broke my tooth a few months ago on a cherry stone - I was in pain for about a week before I finally went to the dentist - ended up have a root canal filling as I didnt want him to take the tooth out - I'm not that brave! I put a hot water bottle on my face too but he said it wasnt a good idea and that ice would of been better! I also put some bonjela on my gums which helped (a bit!) He told me to take ibuprofen and paracetamol alternatively every two hours, this helped alot! Hope it gets better soon
Question Author
thanks yele, yes, this is the remains of a broken back tooth too..

thanks jno, i will try alternating between the two then if it becomes too bad again ..

and thanks to you too quincy, i will try that as the normal mouth wash i used earlier didnt help.
looby - I so sympathise with you - I had toothache a few months ago after my dentist replaced a filling - its still a bit iffy even now.

I find Aspro Clear tablets which you dissolve in water very effective.

Hope you find some relief. Den xx

aw ta den, its bl00dy awful isnt it eh?
my last dentist was useless, i think she was just starting out, and the experience with a root canal filling was sooo traumatic, and since then ive never been back. im just too scared to.
im not even registered with a dentist anymore..

well, good luck with your tooth now den, hope it doesnt give you jip.
Hi looobs, so sorry to hear of your pain, I would put an asprin between the gum and tooth and let it dissolve, although to choose between the toothache and the taste of asprin depends on your pain threshold. I`m surprised the Oraljel hasn`t worked, I swear by it usually. Hope you get a good nights sleep.
I was just going to suggest Clove Oil prudie, we've always got a little bottle in the medicine cupboard - just in case, it's so effective.
Anne, Oil of cloves is still available in any chemist I think, bloody horrible stuff but really works!!
yes rat it does work, even now i can taste it from childhood. i just leave my teeth in the wardrobe now beside my mink hand muff.
Question Author
yeah, and dont it arf whiff ratter?! lol

thank you bill, the extra strength oragel does help to numb the pain quite a bit..

the pain isnt tooooo bad at the min, infact compared to earlier its loads easier.
i was nearly drawn to tears with it when i first posted.
ive just had some more tablets and will settle for sleep soon, hopefully tomorrow itll be ok!

thank you all for all your offers of help and concern, very thoughtful and kind, thanks :o) xx
