I haven't looked at my copy yet but what I usually do is solve as many clues as possible and put them in the margin.
I then concentrate on the two longest words and pencil those into the grid. Some of the clues already solved will provide crossing letters and off you go.
Hmm ... not sure about this "in the margin" thing. You make it sound easy. I'm too reliant on crossing letters to help me along.
I'm going to watch Brighton this afternoon. Maybe I'll set off early and take the crossie to the pub with me (and a book, for when I give up on the crossie).
The correct solution is obtained by putting DETACH & JUST across; DELICT & JOMO down. The right-hand perimeter then spells RIGHT, the bottom perimeter spells BOTTOM
